More great news from PARCS! The funds from the Solar Farm Fund and Lottery Awards for all were to fund a combination of a zip wire, spider’s web climbing net and a playhouse. In order to improve inclusivity we upgraded the playhouse design to a larger wheelchair-accessible playhouse which left us with a £1000 shortfall. Persimmon Community Champions have awarded us that funding! We are so very grateful for their support.
Hello from PARCS! We have lots of great funding news to share! We have received £10,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All, £10,147 from the Solar farm fund and a £300 donation from Slimbridge Horse show. So our running total is now a magnificent £23,687!!! Thank you so much to you all for supporting our project – we are really excited to be making such progress towards our vision.
We have several more funding applications in the pipeline so hope to have more news for you as the year rolls on. You can keep up to date with our progress by checking out our fundraising thermometer situated at the entrance of the Legion car park.

PARCS are a group of volunteers within the parish who are putting together an action plan to regenerate the play area at Slimbridge Playing Fields. They are working closely with the Parish Council and will be undertaking consultation and fundraising on what people would like to see for the future of their playing field.
Putting the PLAY back into Slimbridge playing fields
We have formed a new community group under the Parish Council to regenerate our village playing fields. We are local people who are committed to bringing our community together and providing the best for everyone within it, breaking down social barriers which currently exist, and providing a space for physical development, stimulating the imagination and promoting social interaction. We are all local volunteers and, so far, our committee members are:
Currently the playing fields cater well for footballers and cricketers, but the children’s playground is uninspiring and the space is underused. We will keep the pitches, but aim to change the rest.
Our vision is to put Slimbridge playing fields at the heart of the village, making it a place where people of all ages come together to chat, play, exercise and relax. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive, inspiring and stimulating recreational area, taking account of the needs of the whole community.
We are consulting with local residents and others who may use the space to find out what developments are needed. We would welcome your ideas, but already have some of our own including from consultations so far, which include:
- An assault course
- A zip wire
- Climbing equipment
- Slides and swings
- Mounds, contours and tunnels for imaginative play
- Wooden structures, such as a boat
- A toddler race track
- Play tables, such as for ping pong, table football or drafts/chess
- An array of fruit trees – free fruit for all to eat
- Raised flower beds
- Seating areas
- Barbecue zone with picnic tables
- Direct access from Slimbridge Primary School
This last point is vital as it will encourage children to have some fun physical activity on their way home from school. And with seating and hot drinks from our community shop to hand, it could be a great social space for carers after they pick up their children.
We hope to provide something for every age group, for the active and the less mobile, for the sporty and the relaxed. We would love to hear your views, particularly if there is a favourite facility you would like.
We have conducted a thorough design consultation with local residents and other potential users of the space to find out what developments are needed. A summary of our findings is provided in the documents below. We always welcome any new ideas, so please get in touch if you have anything you would like to share .
Based on our consultation findings we are currently out to tender and meeting with several play equipment companies.
As we are currently out to tender the cost is not yet finalised, but will be funded predominantly by grants and likely to be implemented in phases. We are currently applying to a number of funders for grants.
We will be holding a family fun day on the playing fields in September as well as a tree planting day in due course. We hope you will attend.
Getting it done
We hope lots of people will be willing to get involved with the project. If you would like to join our committee, or help organising a one-off event, please get in touch. You may prefer to contribute by planting up and maintaining flower beds, or designing or making play equipment. Digging, building, painting, planting, any skills you could offer would be most welcome.
